Carl Orff was born on July 10, 1895, in Munich, Germany. His childhood in Munich was full of impressions, which influenced his later works. He was a composer, a man of the theatre and a pedagogue. In his works for the stage, medieval mystery plays, the world's fairytales and Ancient Greek tragedies inspired Orff. His most famous work is CARMINA BURANA.
In 1924, a new creative field began for Carl Orff. With the founding of the Günther School, a centre for education in gymnastics, rhythm, music and dance, Carl Orff developed a new model for teaching music and movement, the so-called Orff Schulwerk. The Schulwerk has enlivened the teaching of music and dance in many parts of the world.
His most famous work is CARMINA BURANA. In his memories wrote Carl Orff about the discovery of the manuscript in Benediktbeuern Monastery, which would serve as the basis for his best-known work. The selection of love songs, feasting and drinking songs, which Carl Orff excerpted from the manuscript and scored for scenes in a cantata, would become the most successful work in contemporary music-theatre.
Carl Orff died on March 29, 1982 in Munich. He is buried in the Schmerzhafte Chapel at the monastery church in Andechs.
